Wastes (manure)
produced by domestic livestock may cause
environmental destruction if not treated
appropriately. Left for a long time, animal
wastes will emit greenhouse effect gas (carbon
dioxide and methane gas) into the air. They
will also contaminate the ground and water,
when their element, nitrogen is discharged
into the ground. So, from the standpoint
of environment conservation, to treat manure
properly is a high requirement.
At present, there are mainly two options
for the farmers to treat manure. Although
both are using microorganism’s function
to decompose manure, big difference is whether
manure decomposition proceeds in the condition
with oxygen or without oxygen. The former
is aerobic process, the latter, anaerobic
process. In the aerobic process, it is necessary
to turn the manure heap over to expose inside
the heap to the air thoroughly enough. On
the other hand, anaerobic process doesn’t
need this procedure, and moreover, has a
merit of generating energy during the process.
For now, farmers are choosing the treating
way of manure taking into account the fact
such as farm’s size and local condition.
What is mostly required for the farmers
is to commit to environmental stewardship
and treat manure thoughtfully. |
