Biogas is a gas mixture which is generated when organic compounds like livestock manure is processed in the absence of air (anaerobic fermentation). This gas mixture is mainly made of methane gas.
Manure heap left in the open air could also produce biogas, because inside the heap there is no air. But in this case, biogas will be released into the atmosphere, which gives a bad effect on global environment as greenhouse effect gas. Also diffused form of gas is difficult to collect and utilize.
Therefore, basic idea of anaerobic process is to carry out anaerobic fermentation in airtight container and collect biogas to harness for power generation.
